Peregrine Falcon Exhibition at Lincoln Cathedral Celebrates a Century of Urban Wildlife

This March, Lincoln Cathedral will host an amazing peregrine falcon display that will highlight one of the most famous raptors in the United Kingdom. A unique look into the life of these amazing urban hunters will be provided by the week-long event, which will take place in the cathedral’s ancient Chapter House from March 23 to 29.

A Rare Look at Peregrine Falcons in the Heart of Lincoln

Peregrine falcons have been nesting high above the spires of Lincoln Cathedral for over a century. This is one of the oldest urban nesting sites in the nation, as records from the 1920s attest to their existence. Because big buildings resemble cliffs and mountain ledges, which are their favorite natural environments, these birds naturally favor them.
Beautiful wildlife photos taken by committed photographers who wait patiently in Minster Yard for the ideal shot will be on display. Additionally, a big screen within the cathedral will show live camera footage that is broadcast straight from the peregrines’ nest.

From Endangered to Thriving: A Conservation Success Story

Once listed as endangered in the 1960s, peregrine falcons nearly disappeared due to insecticides entering the food chain and affecting egg production. Their populations have gradually increased throughout the United Kingdom as a result of conservation measures.
Generations of chicks have been supported by the cathedral’s wooden nest box, which was built in the 1980s by former head carpenter Norman Bonner. Two adult peregrines are now nesting, and eggs are anticipated later this month, according to exhibition organizer and local expert Bruce Hargrave.
